History of the Eldorado
Don Carano was advised not to do it – from business associates to friends, each warned him against opening a brand new hotel casino north of the train tracks intersecting downtown Reno. He was undeterred and the Eldorado Hotel Casino opened in 1973 with 282 guest rooms, two restaurants and 10,000 square feet of gaming space with 200 slots and 12 table games – all on the “wrong side of the tracks.”
The Eldorado of 1973 included a lobby, registration area, coffee shop, cocktail lounge, specialty dinner house and gaming area. Also incorporated into the property were a convention room accommodating up to 600 people, a swimming pool and executive suites.
In 1979, the success of the Eldorado Hotel Casino prompted what would be the first of many expansions and improvements. Guestrooms were brought to a total of 411 with a further expansion completed in September 1985 adding 20,000 square feet of gaming area and four new restaurants. By 1989 the Eldorado had grown to 817 hotel rooms and boasted its own on-site bakery, pasta and gelato shop and butcher shop. In 1992, the Eldorado added a 10 story parking garage for added convenience to guests.
The completion of another dramatic transformation for the Eldorado happened in 1995. Coinciding with the construction of the Silver Legacy Resort Casino, a 50/50 joint venture between the Eldorado and MGM Mirage, the Eldorado added a crossover to the new downtown property connected by the first ever micro-brewery in a casino, The Brew Brothers. The exclusive Spa Tower was created, adding 10 floors of luxury accommodations; a state-of-the-art 10,175 square foot convention center was opened as well as a 580 seat Broadway-style showroom. A coffee roasting company was added to the list of on-site services and the exclusive nightclub, the BuBinga Lounge was launched. Amenities were expanded to include free valet and garage parking, 24-hour room service and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a sun deck and pool-side bar. The casino now totaled 76,500 square feet with more than 1,500 slot machines, 55 table games, a keno lounge, full service state-of-the-art race and sportsbook and poker room.
In 2005 a multi-year, multi-million dollar remodeling project was completed. Every room in the hotel underwent a floor-to-ceiling renovation including new paint, wall coverings and décor, furniture, bed linens, drapes, bath hardware and box springs. Additionally, the corridors and elevator cabs were remodeled.
A $5 million renovation of The Buffet was completed in 2008. The redesign added more live action stations, an exhibition kitchen and a contemporary color scheme to the all-you-can-eat culinary experience.
The hotel added three new dining and nightlife hotspots in 2011 – Bar Centro, a stylish new bar in the middle of the casino action; Sushi Sake, a premium sushi and sake bar added to the Roxy patio; and Pho Mein, an authentic Asian noodle and stir fry kitchen on the casino floor.
Over the years, the Eldorado Hotel Casino has been integral to the revitalization of downtown Reno. Project ReTrac effectively submerged those very same train tracks which divided downtown and the construction of the Reno Events Center has brought hundreds of thousands of visitors to experience world-class entertainment in downtown Reno. The Eldorado has also been a big supporter of festivals and events, from the hotel’s own long-standing signature events like the Great Italian Festival or the BBQ, Blues and Brews Festival to new events like the Eldorado Reno 500 off-road race and Dirt Live Off-Road Expo and has been a major supporter and sponsor of city-wide events like the Reno Rodeo, Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations and more.
The Eldorado Hotel Casino today is a rare mix of upscale atmosphere with a relaxed vibe. Boasting nine award winning restaurants, unlimited nightlife, a Broadway-style showroom, luxurious accommodations and dynamic casino action, the Eldorado is located in what is now considered the heart of downtown Reno.
